WTB Real Website

See above

It’s painfully obvious that this site not only needs an update/revamp, but has grown far too big for its britches.  And that’s without doing jack, diddly, or squat.  I want something that can tie in my youtube page (looking as if it will mainly be containing rabbit hole only vids in the futre), twitch, articles, and of course, some decent fucking forums.

The only problem is, I’m not sure where to start with this.  It’s kind of like playing loadout for the first time.  So many god damn choices!  Where do you begin?!  What’s good? What sucks ass?  ETC ETC.

I hate wasting time.  That said, who doesn’t?  I don’t care to drop countless hours into figuring out code (however basic you think it may be) in order to create a fucking paragraph or bold a single word.  This is obviously where wordpress comes into play and gives an easy format that’s setup for morons like myself to churn out content.

This is also where I’m starting to run into problems as I want things that I’m not sure are possible to do with wordpress.  Logging into the website for starters and not wordpress.com.  Forums are obviously a strong second.  Wordpress sites have all sorts of goofy plugins but most of them seem pretty worthless to me.  Granted, I’m a grade A ding dong when it comes to building a website so I could be missing out on all sorts of obvious strengths, so feel free to point them out if that’s the case.

I’m getting settled into Arizona and moving back into a more stable work schedule that’s going to give me a consistent amount of time off.  Coupled with making about twice as much as I did in OK and it seems stupid not to take this to the next level.  I can’t do it without help though and I figured I’d ask you guys before I sought out a professional web dev team.  AKA go cheap and see what happens

  1. I’m finishing up two websites in the following weeks, but i can definitely help you design and build a new mrpickypants website, and wouldn’t mind helping with a vdfb hub website as well end of February or early March, if you ok with waiting!

  3. As much as heartless and I may (possibly) be RoosterTeeth fanboys, I cannot give Squarespace enough of a recommendation. I’ve used it to recreate a family member’s website and can tell you first hand that it offers a lot for website creators regardless of coding knowledge. It’s versatile and offers plenty of predefined formats that are capable of embeding code from a variety of popular webservices like YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, etc. Be sure to check it out.

  5. My Dad makes web sites on the side of his actual job, I guess I will ask him some questions; however it does look like squarespace is a pretty popular choice.

I’m not looking for handouts per say, but info on how to get it done and get it done right. Info such as how to how exactly the process works, how is media generated, pricing, etc..

Per month? I don’t know, that’s a good question. I’d assume the majority of the fee would be up-front to to build the thing and depending on how updates are handled the rest would be hosting.

  9. Yeah, I’m probably an even bigger ding dong when it comes to creating your own website. I was going to suggest making your own blog on any good blogger websites and posting links to twitter, youtube, etc on your main page or something, but it looks like you’d be better off with some of these other suggestions if you REALLY want your own website.

  10. WordPress does support forums: http://bbpress.org/
You might also want to check out http://www.discourse.org/ which seems to be the future of boards. They also have an official wordpress plugin: https://github.com/discourse/wp-discourse ( “WordPress plugin to provide Discourse comments and a forum for WordPress blogs”)

Are you hosting the blog yourself? You will need a VPS (Virtual private server) or something similar to really get anything done. If you want to use Discource you will definitely need a server, if you want to stay with wordpress exclusively you can look into http://wpengine.com/ for ease of use.

The Twitch integration can be done easily, for example: http://wordpress.org/plugins/twitch-tv-embed-suite
